Julian Ruiz runs an incredible operation in Castilla-La Mancha, with over 150 hectares of farmland, some 50 hectares of which are vineyards. Many of the canes are extremely old, and ungrafted; phylloxera was unable to seize its opportunity here because of the sandy soil that occupies the plain of La Mancha. Due to the ages of the vines, the yields are low, and everything is maintained according to biological and partly biodynamic principles.
The wines are quite extreme, partly because of the long skin contact and extensive oxygen contact that the orange and red wines undergo. The labor-intensive and time-consuming processes would normally push up prices, but Julian Ruiz's wines are very affordable. These are extreme wines from an extreme region for an extreme price!
