For Amós, the grape Macabeo (or Macabeu?) has something special. The grape has both spice-rich fruit (think stewed pears with cloves), but generally lacks the plumpness associated with such flavors. In good hands, there is a kind of salty, fresh heartiness, as if coastal plants have been allowed to soak with the peels. In the case of Amós' Macabeu, pressing is immediate but slow, with a small portion of the stems added back to the fermenting juice, giving some volume to the wine, despite fermenting and ageing in stainless steel.
This Spanish Sting tribute shows that Macabeo can make subtle yet intense wines, full of tension and salt. Our tasting notes read 'SOFT BUT CHALLENGING' in capital letters. Says a lot of course. Velvety texture, low alcohol content and a lot of layering make this a special work. We also suspect that Macabeo (or Macabeu?) runs through Amós' veins.
